ABOUT SAMUEL
Samuel Caraballo is, in no particular order, an actor, dancer, director, choreographer, theatre educator and mask-maker, with a special emphasis in physical theatre. Samuel was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York; trained with such prestigious institutions as the Dance Theatre of Harlem (New York), the Dell'Arte International School of Physical Theatre (Blue Lake, CA) and Deaf West (Los Angeles); and has performed both nationally and internationally. As a freelance artist, he has conducted many school artist-in-residency programs, summer camps, and workshops for both adults and children. His recent artistic and educational partners include New York Deaf Theatre, Theatre Access Project/Theatre Development Fund, SMARTS Performance Art Summer, Sign of the Times Theatre Company, Phoenix Theatre for Children, The Ohio State School for the Deaf, and a variety of public and private schools in the New York metropolitan area.
Samuel was one of five co-founders of the American Dance Theatre of the Deaf (New York) in 1986, and was an acting ensemble member for Onyx Theatre Company (New York) from 1989 to 1997. In 1995, he joined Sunshine Too (Rochester) as choreographer and performer. While with Sunshine Too he toured extensively around the country and traveled to Finland to perform at the Deaf Theatre International Festival. After graduating from the Dell' Arte International School for Physical Theatre (Blue Lake, CA) in 1998 he returned to New York to continue his freelance work, which often takes him across the country.
Other credits include work with Howie Seago on the show "Whispers of a Savage Sort," television appearances in Baskin Robins and Red Cross commercials, and film appearances in "A Price Below Ruby" and "Sign of the Times." He recently made his "pre-Broadway" debut with performances of "The Secret Garden" in New Haven, CT (CAPA/Phoenix Theatre for Children), and designed and built masks for a Commedia dell'arte production of "Beauty and the Beast" in Columbus, OH. He is currently working with Phoenix Theatre for Children to produce a bilingual (ASL/Spoken English) production of "The Miracle Worker."
